December 2014 / Sustainable construction with PVC

In terms of LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), PVC pipes produced using recycled materials are among the most environmentally friendly building materials available. This was the conclusion reached by Professor Michiel Haas of the Dutch Institute for Building Biology and Ecology (NIBE). The main reason is that PVC pipes have a very long working lifetime, require few new raw materials, and when they eventually do need to be replaced, they can be recycled. These days there are PVC drain pipes, gutters and sewage pipes that have been awarded the DUBO quality mark for sustainable construction.
