The PVC Forum Italia (an Italian association representing the PVC industry) and VinylPlus (the European PVC industry’s sustainable development programme) have sponsored a special project entitled ‘Enjoy the Rain’. Enjoy the Rain is a design project focusing on the reuse of end-of-life PVC and on the capture of rainwater. Students at a design and architecture school in Milan attended a five-week workshop, where they learned about potential challenges involving the use of recycled PVC in innovative industrial applications. The students subsequently designed six ‘products’, and arranged to have them manufactured. One such product was the Superdry, a multifunctional item of street furniture made from recycled PVC tubes and membranes. It provides shelter from the rain or the sun, and can be fitted with a rainwater collection system.
