March 2015 / Eternal spring with PVC cherry trees

In Japan, the transition from winter to spring is of great significance. In early April, cherry tree leaves start to change colour. Accordingly, this phenomenon attracts a great deal of attention in Japan. There are websites that keep track of where this colour change is happening, and of how far it has progressed.
As part of an exhibition in Washington, the English designer Tom Price has created artificial cherry trees using PVC piping and cable ties. He drew his inspiration from the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC. This is the city’s way of commemorating a gift of 3,000 cherry trees in 1912, from the Mayor of Tokyo at the time.
